59 This paper describes a framework for introducing visually smooth
60 surfaces into sketch-based freeform modeling systems. An existing
61 sketch-based freeform modeling system generates rough polygonal
62 meshes with uneven triangulations after each operation. Our
63 approach generates a dense, visually smooth polygonal mesh by
64 beautifying and refining the original rough mesh. A beautification
65 process generates near-equilateral triangles with a near-uniform
66 distribution of vertices to mask the noise and bad sampling of the
67 uneven mesh. The vertices are distributed on a smoothed surface
68 that approximately interpolates the original mesh. Refinement
69 generates a smooth, dense mesh by subdividing the beautified
70 mesh and moving the vertices to the interpolative surface. The
71 smooth interpolative surface is computed via implicit quadratic
72 surfaces that best fit the mesh locally in a least-squares sense.
