   1 the doctor had prescribed a nondeterministic dream therapy

   3 a speaker in her pillow, electrodes planted in her vocal tract which sense
   4 tiny fluctuations in nerve signals that escape hypnagogic suppression.. we watch her through
   5 infrared scopes, and when we see her eyes shift under her lids, we
   6 start asking questions.. "what are the names of all the bees?" and the
   7 answers, processed by an apple ii hooked to an oscilloscope and read aloud
   8 in a voice not unlike robocop's, we transmit at ten and a half
   9 kilowatts into the night.. "seventeen, thirty two, eleven, four, four, six, twenty...". we
  10 repeat the experiments two nights before every new and full moon, each night
  11 on a different frequency. without fail, a different species of bird wakes and
  12 comes to roost inside of our tower, and at dawn we collect the
  13 eggs the birds do lay. from these we prepare an omelette, adding a
  14 small quantity of fresh thyme, and feed this to her when she wakes.
