   1 dirvish is a backup system using rsync and link farms.

   3 Each image is a directory containing transfer log, summary, tree
   4 and if transfer errors were detected an rsync_error file.  The
   5 transfer log retains the the output of any pre and post processing
   6 commands and the rsync log listing all files that were changed or
   7 added with some statistical information.  The summary file contains
   8 all the information about how the image was created and meta-data
   9 for managing the image in config file format. Tree is the copy of
  10 the client tree.

  12 The client directory tree is compared with an existing image to
  13 create a new image. Unchanged files are shared between images.
  14 For changed files only those parts that actually change are transfered
  15 over the network. Unchanged portions of files are copied from the
  16 reference image.

  18 The resulting images contain complete copies of the original trees
  19 preserving ownership and file permissions. In this way even though
  20 the backups are made incrementally, each image can be used
  21 independently for restores or to make removable-media off-site
  22 copies or archives.

  24 The removal of an image will have no effect on other images.
