  39 This section describes the special files, related driver functions,

  64 .Sh HP DEVICE SUPPORT
  65 This section describes the hardware supported on the
  66 .Tn HP
  67 9000/300 series.
  68 Software support for these devices comes in two forms.  A hardware
  69 device may be supported with a character or block
  70 .Em device driver ,
  71 or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a
  72 .Em network interface driver .
  73 Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file
  74 system of a special type; see
  75 .Xr mknod 8 .
  76 Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess
  77 communication facilities provided by the system; see
  78 .Xr socket 2 .

  80 A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time
  81 and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled
  82 into the system.  When the resultant system is booted, the
  83 autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device
  84 and, if found, enable the software support for it.
  85 If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration
  86 time it is not accessible at any time afterwards.
  87 To enable a device which did not autoconfigure,
  88 the system will have to be rebooted.
