13 <title>&konqueror; Basics</title>
15 <important><para>Like all &kde; applications, &konqueror; is highly
16 configurable. This document describes how &konqueror; behaves with the normal,
17 default settings.</para>
18 <para> A three button mouse can be useful when you are running
19 &konqueror; or any other &kde; application. If your mouse only has two buttons
20 then you should be able to set your system up so that you can simulate a &MMB;
21 by pressing both buttons at the same time.</para>
22 <para>You can read more about mouse usage in <xref
23 linkend="lmb-mmb"/></para>
24 <para>If you are used to having to double-click to perform an action,
25 then take care, because in common with the rest of &kde;, &konqueror; defaults
26 to single-clicking.</para></important>

29 <title>Starting &konqueror;</title>
31 <para>Being a combined File Manager and Browser,
32 &konqueror; will automatically
33 switch between the two modes as needed when it is running, but it is convenient
34 to be able to choose which mode is to be used when you start it up.</para>

38 or desktop, then <mousebutton>left</mousebutton> click on it to open
39 &konqueror; as a file manager.</para></listitem>

82 <para>The <interface>Titlebar</interface> is the strip across the top of
83 &konqueror;'s window, and operates in the same way as for other &kde;
84 applications. <mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> click on the central portion to
85 bring up the neat Titlebar menu.</para>
87 <para>The <interface>Menubar</interface> is the strip containing the names of
88 the drop-down menus. <mousebutton>Left</mousebutton> click on a name to
89 alternately show and hide that menu, or use <keycombo
90 action="simul">&Alt;<keycap>the underlined
91 letter</keycap></keycombo> in the name as a hot key, for example <keycombo
92 action="simul">&Alt;<keycap>E</keycap></keycombo> to show the
93 <guimenu>Edit</guimenu> menu. The various menus are described in the <link
94 linkend="menubar">Menubar</link> section of this document.</para>
96 <para>The <interface>Toolbar</interface> contains icons for commonly used
97 operations. <mousebutton>Left</mousebutton> clicking on an icon will activate
98 it. If you have enabled tooltips in the Control Center <menuchoice><guimenu>
100 Themes</guimenu><guisubmenu>Style</guisubmenu></menuchoice>
101 dialog a brief description of what that icon does will appear when you hover
102 the pointer over it.</para>
104 <para>Some icons, for example the Up and Back icons in the previous screenshot,
105 have a small black triangle at their bottom right corner. If you hold the &LMB;
106 pressed while the cursor is over this type of icon a small dropdown menu will
107 appear.</para> <para><mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> clicking on the
108 <interface>Toolbar </interface> will bring up the <link
109 linkend="rmb-menus"><guilabel>Toolbar Menu</guilabel></link> which you can use
110 to change the <interface>Toolbar</interface>'s appearance and position.</para>
112 <para>The <interface>Location Toolbar</interface> shows the path to the
113 directory, &URL; or file being viewed. You can type a path or &URL; here and
114 press &Enter; or <mousebutton>left</mousebutton> click on the
115 <guiicon>Go</guiicon> icon at the right hand end of the <interface>Location
116 Toolbar</interface> to go to it. The black icon at the left hand end of the
117 <interface>Location Toolbar</interface> clears the text entry box.</para>
119 <para>The <interface>Bookmark Toolbar</interface> is the area under the
120 <interface>Location Toolbar</interface> in the previous screenshot. You can add
121 frequently used bookmarks here; see the <link
122 linkend="orgbmark">Organizing
124 Bookmarks</link> section of this document.</para>
126 <para>The <interface>Window</interface> is the main area of &konqueror; and
127 can show you the contents of a directory, web page, document or image. Using
128 the <link linkend="menu-window"><guimenu>Window</guimenu></link> menu you can
129 split &konqueror;'s main window into one or more separate views, useful for
130 drag and drop operations, or set it to contain two or more tabbed views.
133 <para>The <interface>Status Bar</interface> runs across the bottom of the
135 and often shows general information about whatever the mouse pointer is
137 over. If you have split the main window into a number of views you will get an
138 Status Bar for each view, and it will include a small green light at the left
139 hand end to show which is the <quote>active</quote>
140 view. <mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> clicking on the Status Bar brings up the
141 Status Bar <link linkend="rmb-menus"><mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> Mouse
142 Button Menu</link>.</para>
144 <note><para>Don't worry if your &konqueror; doesn't look exactly like this
145 screenshot; it is highly configurable. In particular:</para>

149 linkend="menu-settings"><guimenu>Settings</guimenu></link> menu to choose
150 whether to show or hide the Menubar, Main Toolbar, Location Toolbar and
151 Bookmark Toolbar, or even to add an Extra Toolbar.</para></listitem>
152 <listitem><para>You can also <quote>flatten</quote> the toolbars by
153 <mousebutton>left</mousebutton> clicking on the vertical lines at the left hand end
154 of the bars, or move them around by holding the &LMB; down while you

185 &konqueror;'s window. It changes the cursor to show a question mark alongside
188 <para>When this question mark is visible, a &LMB; click won't actually do
189 anything until you have clicked on a control (or the text alongside it) that
190 supports <guimenuitem>What's This?</guimenuitem>, in which case it will
192 a reasonably comprehensive description of what the control is supposed to do.

194 <guimenuitem>What's This?</guimenuitem> feature.</para>

200 Mouse Button Actions</title>
202 <para>If you click the &LMB; on an item in &konqueror;'s window, it will
204 <quote>activated</quote>. Thus</para>

228 window (<quote>Preview</quote> means that you can see the file but not change
231 <para>&konqueror; decides what the file type is by matching the filename
232 extension against a list of known types. If that fails it tries to guess
233 the type from the file contents. You can change the list of known file types
234 and associated actions with the <guilabel>File Associations</guilabel> page of
235 the <menuchoice><guimenu>Settings</guimenu><guimenuitem>Configure Konqueror...
236 </guimenuitem></menuchoice> dialog.</para></listitem>
240 <para>Clicking the &MMB; on a file or folder name or icon does essentially the
241 same as <mousebutton>left</mousebutton> clicking except that it usually does it
242 in a new &konqueror; window, unless the <guilabel>Open links in new tab instead
243 of in new window</guilabel> box has been checked in the
244 <guimenuitem>Behavior</guimenuitem> page of the
245 <menuchoice><guimenu>Settings</guimenu><guimenuitem>Configure
247 Konqueror...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> dialog. &konqueror; can open
248 links on pages and <menuchoice><guimenu>Bookmarks</guimenu></menuchoice>,
250 <guibutton>Home</guibutton>, <guibutton>Up</guibutton>,
251 <guibutton>Back</guibutton> and <guibutton>Forward</guibutton>

254 <para>Holding the &Shift; key down while pressing the &MMB; will open the link

257 part of the main view (not over a link or file name or icon) &konqueror; will
258 copy the contents of the clipboard into the Location Toolbar and try to use

263 <title><mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> Mouse Button Menus</title>
265 <para>Clicking the &RMB; on almost any part of &konqueror;'s window
266 will bring up an appropriate context menu.</para>

289 Toolbar to bring up the Toolbar Menu. You can use it to control whether the
290 Toolbar is at the top, bottom, left or right of &konqueror;'s window.
291 You can also use the Toolbar Menu to set the size of the buttons on the
293 and whether they are shown as icons, text or both.</para></listitem>

316 of a view then you will get a menu that contains, among other options, the

326 clicking on the name or icon of any file or folder not only
327 <quote>selects</quote> that item but also brings up a menu allowing you to

330 ways, add it to your <guimenu>Bookmarks</guimenu>, open it with the program of
331 your choice or preview it, rename it, or edit the file type or

348 &konqueror;, without having to start up <application>KHelpCenter</application>.
