  40 <para>The system bell or beep is a feature of the X server, which
  41 attempts to make good use of the available hardware. </para>

  43 <para>&kde; normally doesn't use the system bell; instead using its
  44 own system notifications, which could include log entries, message
  45 popups, or its own beep.  You can configure these in the
  46 <guilabel>System Notifications</guilabel> &kcontrol; module.</para>

  48 <note><para>It isn't always possible for the X server to actually make
  49 a beep sound with exactly the parameters selected due to hardware
  50 limitations. For example, on most PCs, volume control is not very good
  51 so the X server seems to fake low volume with a reduced duration of
  52 the sound. Thus, if the settings don't seem to do anything, this is
  53 because the X server and/or the hardware don't support anything
  54 better.</para></note>
