114 in many aspects of growth, development, and responses to environmental
115 conditions and assault by pathogens and insects. It is therefore not
116 surprising that a substantial portion of the plant proteome is
117 localized in the cell wall/apoplast. However, while major initiatives
118 are now underway to map the proteomes of many plant organelles, such
119 as the <a href="http://ppdb.tc.cornell.edu/dbsearch/subproteome.aspx">
120 chloroplast</a>, the cell wall proteome, or "secretome", is far
121 less well characterized than those of other subcellular compartments.

127 <strong>What is the "secretome"?</strong> The term "secretome" is
128 generally used to refer to the population of proteins that are
129 secreted outside the plasma membrane of a cell, but can also be used
130 to describe the subset of the proteome that enter the <a href="/secretom/detail/secretion_path">secretory
135 <strong>The purpose of this NSF-funded project</strong> is to
136 catalog and study the dynamic properties of
137 the cell wall proteome, or secretome, using tomato (<i>Solanum
138 lycopersicum</i>) as a model system.
143 <strong>Why study the "secretome"?</strong> Proteomic analysis of cellular
144 compartments reveals the subcellular locations of a specific protein,
145 or protein complex, which in turn can be a valuable step towards
146 understanding protein function. Localization information also helps in
147 the identification of protein interactions and targeting pathways, and
148 peptide motifs and structural signatures that can direct proteins to
149 various cellular locations. In addition the analysis of a subcellular
150 proteome has the advantage of requiring "biological
151 pre-fractionation," which can substantially enhance the detection of
152 lower-abundance proteins.
